Join the Fight Against Melanoma at the Safe in the Sun Run

For the third year, the Central Iowa community will join to raise awareness and funds for melanoma research with the Safe in the Sun 5K/10K Run. Safe In The Sun is a non-profit charity run based in Story County, IA. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, at 9:00 AM at Ada Hayden Heritage Park in Ames, Iowa. Whether you’re a runner, a walker, or simply a supporter of the cause, this event is an opportunity to help make a meaningful impact in the fight against melanoma and skin cancer.

The Cancer Bucket Foundation

Founded in 2022, The Cancer Bucket Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to fund groundbreaking melanoma research and promote skin cancer prevention. The organization was created by Jordan Hauck, Founder of Crown Cover and two-time stage 4 melanoma survivor; Dr. Leslie Christenson, a dermatologist specializing in skin cancer treatment; and Megan Burt, a skin cancer survivor and Doctor of Physical Therapy. Together, this trio works to raise awareness about melanoma and raise money to help fund research to advance treatment options.

Since its inception, The Cancer Bucket Foundation has raised over $28,000 for melanoma research through the University of Iowa Center for Advancement. These funds have supported critical research into immunotherapies that have transformed cancer treatments for patients worldwide.

Why Join Us for the Safe in the Sun Run

The Safe in the Sun Run is a fun way to join a growing movement to educate the community about sun safety and early skin cancer detection. At the same time, we’re generating vital funds for melanoma research. Proceeds from the race registrations, sponsorships, and donations go toward research grants and support programs implementing sun-safety measures.

This event was founded with the belief that prevention and research go hand-in-hand. While melanoma remains one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, advancements in treatment continue to save lives. By participating in this event, you are directly supporting the future of cancer treatment and prevention.

  • Register to Run or Walk – Sign up for the 5K or 10K and participate in this fun and impactful event.
  • Donate – If you can’t participate, consider donating to the Cancer Bucket Foundation to support melanoma research.
  • Sponsor – Proceeds from sponsors are donated to provide research funds and grants to organizations and universities implementing sun-safety measures and leading skin cancer and melanoma research efforts. Share information about the event and help to educate others on the importance of sun safety and early detection.
